International Credit Union Day 2026

Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the Department of Co-operatives and Friendly Societies (DCFS), along with Jamaica’s twenty-three (23) credit unions and financial cooperatives around the world, will celebrate the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day.

This year's theme, "Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World," highlights the enduring value of credit unions in an increasingly complex financial environment. At a time when individuals and communities are faced with changing economic conditions and financial uncertainty, credit unions continue to provide a trusted, member-focused approach to financial services.

The theme reminds us that even in a noisy and rapidly changing world, cooperation can provide that needed stability. Through responsible governance, sound financial practices, member participation, and a continued commitment to service, credit unions can remain trusted partners for generations to come.

The strength of the credit union movement is rooted in cooperation. Credit unions are owned and democratically controlled by their members, with a focus on personalised service, financial inclusion, and economic well-being. They demonstrate that finance can be built not only around financial transactions, but also around trust, shared responsibility, and community.

Jamaica has been part of this movement for more than eight decades. The country's first credit union, Sodality Credit Union, was established on September 12, 1941, through the efforts of Father John Peter Sullivan and members of the Catholic Young Men's Sodality. From those early beginnings, the credit union movement has grown into an important part of Jamaica's cooperative and financial landscape.

The Department of Co-operatives and Friendly Societies has and continues to play an important role in the development and sustainability of credit unions. As the Registrar and regulator of cooperative societies, the Department facilitates registration, promotes compliance with the Co-operative Societies Act and Regulations, conducts audits and inspections, and provides education, training, and technical support to strengthen the operations and governance of societies. These functions help to promote accountability, sound governance, and the protection of members' interests.

As we celebrate International Credit Union Day 2026, we recognise the contribution of credit unions to the financial well-being of individuals, families, and communities across Jamaica. We also recognise the members, volunteers, employees, and other stakeholders whose commitment continues to strengthen the cooperative movement.

The Department of Co-operatives and Friendly Societies extends warm congratulations to Jamaica's credit unions and the wider global credit union movement on the 78th anniversary of International Credit Union Day.

Happy International Credit Union Day 2026!
